Velodrome Design
When designing Boulder Indoor Cycling, the goal was to create a state-of-the-art velodrome that could accommodate elite-level and recreational cyclists alike. In order to make sure we got it right, we purchased an existing design from one of the best-known velodrome designers in North America and then made minor adjustments to account for the differences in our facility layout.
Because of the unique configuration of our building, it has longer than normal corners at each end which require the banking be less steep than most cycling tracks of a similar length. While proportionally less elongated than most ovals, the track still has continuous radius corners at each end. Coupled with professionally designed transitions from the straights, our velodrome provides competition-level speeds along with the requisite level of safety one would expect from a high performance cycling track! A timing loop from AMB has recently been installed to provide lap times with a precision of .001 seconds.
Quick Facts
- Construction: Wood
- Overall Length: 142 meters
- Maximum Banking (corners): 45 degrees
- Minimum Banking (straights): 16 degrees
- Current Lap Record: 7.690 seconds (Kevin Selker)
The Model For Our Design
Forest City’s Velodrome is identical in length to Boulder Indoor Cycling, yet it has steeper banking: 50 degrees – WOW!
