Track Cycling
Boulder Indoor Cycling has plenty of opportunities for members to engage in non-competitive recreational riding on the velodrome. These include Training Sessions and Coached Workouts for all levels of riders (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert) as well as periodic Open Riding sessions scattered throughout the week.
Velodrome Safety
Track cycling is a unique sport and requires the use of specialized bicycles to maintain a safe environment. Among other important aspects of the design geometry, these bikes have fixed gears and no brakes. Needless to say, it is a very different type of riding experience from road cycling and carries with it the responsibility to ensure all our riders are prepared and qualified for that experience. As such, and because we are committed to a safe and fun experience for all, BIC will require that each member undergo a Track Certification prior to participating in Open Riding sessions or the Racing Leagues.
Those holding a current accredited cycling license listing a Track Rating of Cat II or above will simply need to demonstrate proper technique and skill – all others will need to enroll in Track Cycling Instruction classes with one of our professional coaches. Beginning Instruction classes are intended for those who are new to cycling. Intermediate classes are for those who are accomplished road cyclists but either have not ridden on a track or are unfamiliar with the layout and level of steepness found at our facility. Advanced Instruction is geared toward those either looking to refine their track riding technique or learn the subtleties of racing. For further information, you may download either our Frequently Asked Questions or our Velodrome Rules and Guidelines (both .pdf files).
Track Bicycles Required!
That’s right: traditional road bikes will not be permitted on the velodrome (we can hear the collective groan). Again, the reason for this is for your protection as well as the Velodrome itself. Road bikes typically have geometry and crank arm lengths that are not conducive to safe riding on steep banking and the use of brakes in close riding quarters creates an unsafe environment. Using only track bicycles will help to minimize accidents due to the “high-siding” of crank arms as well as damage to the wooden track itself as a result. BIC has an entire fleet of state-of-the-art track bicycles provided by Fuji available for use by our members (view our current rental bike lineup here). Of course, those that own their own track bikes will be permitted to use them once approved by BIC’s staff.
